Best Coffee Grinders for Cold Brew (2026)

by barotips editorial team Β· πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Canada edition

Cold brew uses the coarsest grind in the lineup: 1300-1500 Β΅m, like coarse sea salt. The 12-18 hour brew time is very forgiving, but too-fine grind causes over-extraction and bitter notes. Any burr grinder that reaches French press setting can grind for cold brew, just go one or two clicks coarser.

What we looked for

  • Burr grinder reaching coarsest 30+ setting
  • Burr type does not matter much (steep is long)
  • Capacity for 100+ g batch (cold brew uses lots of coffee)
  • Easy to clean (coffee oils accumulate at coarse setting)
  • Available on Amazon.ca

Frequently asked questions

Cold brew grind: how coarse?
Coarsest setting. Like coarse sea salt. On Baratza Encore, settings 35-40. On Fellow Opus, settings 35-41. Adjust 1-2 clicks finer if your cold brew tastes weak after 18 hrs.
How much coffee for cold brew?
1:8 to 1:5 concentrate ratio. For a 1 L batch: 125-200 g coarse-ground coffee + 1 L cold water, steep 12-18 hr. Dilute concentrate 1:1 to taste.
Can I use blade grinder for cold brew?
Sort of. Blade grinders produce inconsistent particle sizes; some too fine (causes over-extraction). Cold brew is more forgiving than other brew methods, but a burr grinder upgrades the taste noticeably.
Why does my cold brew taste sour?
Under-extracted. Either grind too coarse (try 2 clicks finer) or brew time too short (extend to 16-18 hr).
Should I get a finer-grinder for cold brew specifically?
No. Your daily-use grinder works. Cold brew is the easiest brew method on grinders; any burr grinder reaching coarse setting handles it.
